provenence Our 1935 Rolls Royce 20/25 Thrupp and Maberly Limousine is a very special motor car with a stunning provenance.The original owners were no less than Florence and George Arliss, stars of the silver screen during the roaring twenties and thirties. George was the first British actor to win an Oscar, for Best Actor, at the 1930 Academy Awards for his outstanding portrayal of Disraeli in the film of the same title. Born George Augustus Andrews, George Arliss began his stage career in 1886 aged 18, a British actor of the old school. He went to America in 1902 and stayed for two decades, appearing in many Broadway productions and, later, silent films. On stage, Arliss established himself in historical roles or as eminent statesmen, kings, rajahs, eccentric millionaires, etc. He transferred these talents to film and unexpectedly became a major star. At the age of 53, he debuted on film in The Devil (1921), in which he had appeared on stage in 1906. Married to actress Florence Montgomery, who appeared with him in several films, he retired from the screen (following Dr. Syn) when she lost her sight in 1937 - just two years after they commissioned the Rolls Royce.Having passed through the hands of a small number of wealthy socialites following her sale in 1946 (after Georges death on 5th February at the age of 78), this beautiful Rolls Royce was known to be in attendance at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey on June 2nd 1953 and following that she served as one of the wedding entourage vehicles at the celebrated royal marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Kent at York Minster on June 8th 1961.In the following years she saw duty on many fronts, including a period providing sterling service during the eighties to the Mayor of York.With such a celebrated provenance as this, a bride and her groom would be very hard pressed indeed to find a more impressive and salubrious wedding car.

faqs Frequently Asked Questions1) Can we view the cars before booking? Of course - in fact we actively encourage it. And when it comes to choosing a wedding car, it simply has to be a vintage Rolls Royce, doesn't it? All cars are available for viewing in Chippenham - click here to contact us to make an appointment. 2) Can we use the same Rolls Royce to take the bridesmaids to church first? Yes - and it will cut your costs dramatically compared with booking two cars elsewhere. The cost of hiring your Rolls Royce is based on the standard price below that covers the first 55 miles travelled in total, from the time it leaves base to the time it returns. If you are local it may therefore cost you absolutely nothing to include a trip to church for the bridesmaids and mum. And even if you need to exceed the 55 miles, each additional mile is only charged at £1. 3) How much will it cost to hire? We charge a very competitive flat fee of £360 for the Rolls Royce and £220 for the Bentley which, to reiterate, covers up to the first 55 miles of total travel and thereafter just £1 per mile. There is no VAT to pay. The Grooms cars are £155 for either the Aston Martin or the Lotus Esprit Turbo which also covers up to the first 55 miles of total travel and thereafter just £1 per mile. There is also no VAT to pay. 4) How long can we have the Rolls Royce or Bentley for? Our tariff is based on a normal church wedding taking around three hours and we expect to be with you for about four hours in total to cover the church photographs and additional time outside the reception for your guests and photographer to take pictures when you arrive. Please dont worry about it - if you have a special request, for example stopping on the way to the reception for photos by the lake, we'll bend over backwards to help. The cars are only ever booked out for one wedding per day. 5) What's the normal procedure with the Grooms car? The Aston or Lotus will arrive at the specified address to collect the groom 30 minutes earlier than the time you specify. The groom will then be driven to the church, where he and the car can be photographed together before the service. The car will then normally depart before the bride arrives but if you have any special requests please just ask us and we will try to accommodate them. 6) How far in advance do we need to book? There is no specific time limit - you simply have a better chance of securing the cars you really want if you book absolutely as soon as you can. 7) Can you carry children in the back of the Rolls Royce? The new law that came into force on 18th September 2006, specifically states that children under three years old must be carried in a baby seat properly secured with a seat belt. As vintage cars do not have seat belts fitted it would be illegal to carry a child under three years old and the driver would be legally responsible. However, children over the age of three are permitted to travel in the rear without child seats or boosters where no seat belts are fitted. 8) What happens if a car breaks down? All our vehicles are fastidiously maintained by the owner who cherishes them like a baby and as a consequence they have proven to be extremely reliable. If, in the event of an accident or serious breakdown, a car is rendered unserviceable before your wedding day, we will endeavour to find you a similar replacement or offer you a full refund. However, it always pays to be prepared for breakdowns that might happen on the day, so we advise a very simple and fool-proof back up plan for you to implement yourselves. We know you will agree, that the single most important thing is to get both the groom and the bride to church on time. The plan therefore, is to nominate a family member or friend, with a mobile phone, who can act as your rescue car in the unlikely event of a breakdown, either on the way to you or on the way to church. It will give you great peace of mind to know that, whatever happens, both of you will get to church on time and that any breakdowns are extremely rare.Whilst we cannot accept responsibility for such an unforeseen event, it goes without saying, that should such an unlikely accident or breakdown occur, all your money would be refunded without delay. 9) Do you accept Credit Cards? Unfortunately we cannot. A non-returnable deposit of £50 is required to book any of the cars and this will be confirmed in writing as soon as the cheque is cleared. The balance is payable please at least twenty one days before the wedding. Cheques or cash are acceptable for both.Terms & Conditions A non-returnable deposit of £50 is payable on booking to reserve the vehicle for the specified date. The full balance must be received at least 21 days prior to that date or the booking may become void. The client understands that the total length of trip on which the cost is calculated by the AA route-finder website, is calculated from the base garage at 41 Buckingham Road, Chippenham, SN15 3TE and back again. Prices quoted are valid for 3 months and fixed on booking. No child under the age of three years must ride in the rear of the Rolls Royce as there are no seat belts to restrain a legally required child seat. The proprietors of Kington Carriage will always endeavour to provide well maintained and serviced vehicles but cannot be held responsible for any unforeseeable breakdown or accident. In the unlikely event of a breakdown, a full refund will be made without delay. By making a booking, the client accepts that Kington Carriage will not be held liable for any consequential loss incurred as a result of any vehicle breakdown or failure to arrive as a result of extreme weather conditions or other acts of God or as a result of an accident. Please remember that pre-war cars are not as powerful as modern cars and you should consider this carefully when planning your journeys and making your choice. We don't advise long journeys in vintage or pre-war cars.No personal information provided by the client will be used for any other purpose other than to book the wedding vehicles. By making a booking, the client accepts that they have read, understood and accepted these terms and conditions and are happy to be bound by them.
